One of the first domesticated crops in the Near East, lentils are also referenced in the Bible as an ingredient in Ezekiel Bread, made from sprouted lentils and grains. With a mild, sweet and nutty flavor, Duru Split Red Lentils (Kirmizi Mercimek) are a perfect ingredient for soups, stews, curries and Indian Dhal and veggie burgers. They are wonderful soup thickeners and delicious in stuffed peppers or eggplant filled with rice, quinoa or bulgur. One half cup of uncooked red lentils contains 22g of protein, 10g of fiber, 40mg of calcium and 600mg of potassium. Perfect for vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free and health-conscious eaters, split red lentils are very low in fat.
