Mediterranean Sweets

Another food that quickly evokes a strong sense of place are fillo desserts. Classic nut-filled pastries soaked in syrup take many forms in the Mediterranean and Middle East. These regional dessert essentials are dominated by various forms of baklava, made from crisp, flaky layers of fillo, a moist nutty filling and a syrupy bottom crust of rose water or orange blossom, among other flavors. Specifically from the Balkans, we offer scored syrup-soaked hurmasice and fried batter tulumba pastries. Another dessert characteristic of the region is kataifi, also produced in various forms according to country of origin. This crusty shredded fillo forms a perfect net to catch syrups and nuts. Saragli (nut rolls) and blossoms complete this wide range of Mediterranean sweets.
