Bulgur is made with whole wheat that is cleaned, parboiled, dried, ground into particles, and sifted into distinct sizes. A mainstay of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean diets for thousands of years, this “ancient grain” is a wonderfully versatile culinary ingredient loaded with nutritional value. Our #2 Medium Traditional Bulgur is an all-purpose bulgur ideal for salads, stews, soups, multi-grain bakery goods – and especially for veggie burgers and chili! Because bulgur is always parboiled, all that is required for cold salads like tabbouleh is to soak the grains in warm water before using them. To amplify the inherent nutty flavor profile of our medium bulgur for warm preparations, toast the grains in butter for 5 minutes before adding your cooking liquid. You will find the cooking time is much faster than rice! Bulgur wheat is a rich source of fiber, protein and naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, iron, phosphorus and manganese. Because bulgur has a lower glycemic index than pasta or rice, it is perfect for diabetics. Bulgur is a great grain for vegan, vegetarians and omnivores and not recommended for anyone with Celiac Disease or with a gluten intolerance.
